Consumer Information
Your home is usually the single largest asset you will ever own in your life. Doing your “homework” now and making sure you select the right contractor for your home or project can help prevent many problems later on. The information provided here is intended to provide an oversight of the many considerations that go into your home construction or project. New Mexico Home Builders Association members want you to have the best possible outcome for your home.
Here are some tips for home building consumers:
Get recommendations from people you know and trust
- Check with the local Home Builders Association and consumer protection officials for complaints against a contractor
- Read customer reviews and use online rating websites
- Get a written estimate that includes a description of the work, materials, completion date, and price
- Read the contract carefully and make sure it includes the contractor’s name, address, phone number, and license number
- Don’t hire someone who tells you a contract “won’t be necessary”
